Baby whale put down, destined for Japan

The ABC News service in Australia reports that a baby humpback whale abandoned by its mother off Sydney’s northern beaches earlier this week, has been put down.

The calf, nicknamed Colin, was found in the Pittwater Basin and has been unable to feed since being separated from its mother.

The calf has tried unsuccessfully to suckle moored yachts for several days.

Names are a social disability - judge rules

People around the world with unusual names are reeling at news that courts can now legally change your name - even without your permission.

This is the finding of a court in New Zealand that decided that the pretty name “Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii” was a social disability that caused the eight year-old child distress and therefore had to be changed.

Judge Murfitt said that names were a very real part of a person’s existence.

Using hedgehog with deadly intent

Throwing a hedgehog at a teenager has landed a New Zealand man a date in court, a newspaper report says.

It seems William Singalargh liked Russell Crowe’s (also a Kiwi by birth) antics with using a phone to assault someone, but decided to one one step further.

So he picked up the animal and threw it about five metres at a 15-year-old in the eastern North Island town of Whakatane in February, the Herald on Sunday reported.

Boys wolf food as family battles fire

A bunch of local youths in the holiday nation of Fiji, have dismayed a family after they broke into their kitchen and ate food from their fridge - while the family was downstairs battling a fire that had broken out in an adjacent shop.

The owner of Une Une Store, which is located next to the burnt shop in Navua, Umesh Kumar Sen, was all praise for the National Fire Authority for being prompt but expressed dismay at the group of boys who ate their food.
