Transplanting a 750 year old sapling

Moving trees is not uncommon, either as large trees for new gardens or even to make way for roadworks, but a tree 750 years old?

While the Poms have the famous oaks of Sherwood Forest that have a maximum life span of around 700 years, the crazy guys in Western Australia have taken it upon themselves to move a tree that is already 750 years old - and they reckon that it has another 300 years left in it, so the shift is worthwhile.

It is interesting that some in China have expressed concern over this policewoman’s actions. Would they have said the same thing if the orphans were 35 year old males? See, not ‘pigs’ are bad.

A Chinese policewoman who breastfed babies orphaned during last month’s earthquake has been given a better job, prompting online protests that promotions should be awarded on merit, not merely for good deeds.

Product to be renamed following Microsoft threats

A challenger to the popular Microsoft Office program is going to be renamed after threats of legal action from Microsoft.

The recently launched product (read about it here), which provides an alternative to all the inclusions of the Microsoft office suit and sells for hundreds of dollars cheaper has been targeted as trying to pass itself off as Office.

This has led to a rethink on the name and the packaging with the product now to be called FukOffice.

New jellyfish looks just like snot

Researchers at the Townsville Aquarium are excited about a new jelly fish they have found.

Dr Lisa Gershwin lead researcher, said the jellyfish was not found in the open ocean, but in a jellyfish tank at the aquarium.

It is an unusual looking jellyfish - about 1 cm long and looking well, rather like snot on the bottom of the tank.

Why fat cells are like balloons and how to get thin

No amount of dieting will alter the number of fat-hoarding cells in our bodies, research has suggested.

Scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden say that the number is set during adolescence and stays the same, regardless of obesity later in life.

The journal Nature reports how they tested patients who lost huge amounts of weight, and found little change in fat cell numbers.

Man almost pea’d to death

Death in a mire of dried pea, hmmm there must be better ways to go.

I guess that is what an unnamed man was thinking when he almost drowned to death in a silo of peas - he was rescued from a grain silo in Western Australia after being buried up to his neck in tonnes of peas.

It is not yet known if the man fell into the silo while it was being loaded or if the product was dumped on him while working inside.

Boys wolf food as family battles fire

A bunch of local youths in the holiday nation of Fiji, have dismayed a family after they broke into their kitchen and ate food from their fridge - while the family was downstairs battling a fire that had broken out in an adjacent shop.

The owner of Une Une Store, which is located next to the burnt shop in Navua, Umesh Kumar Sen, was all praise for the National Fire Authority for being prompt but expressed dismay at the group of boys who ate their food.

Croc attack victim killed by snake

The Northern Territory news reports about a woman who survived an extraordinary crocodile attack 23 years ago has been killed by a snake.

Respected ecologist, feminist and renowned author Val Plumwood who described her death roll with the giant saltie as “terror, terror, terror” was found dead on her wilderness property.

The species of snake responsible for her death was still unknown last night.
